During this time of the year, many people use the momentum of SPRINGTIME to de-clutter their houses, do some much needed repair, deep purge, re-design and re-organize things around their homes.
For example, my yard is in total need of a complete OVERHAUL, new sod, new landscaping and in our lives many times, we find ourselves in need of a complete OVERHAUL in our relationships, our finances, even our careers. We need to plant new ideas, new thoughts, new motivation. We need to dig up what isn’t serving us well in our lives.
I don’t know about you but in my life, I’ve been stuck, very stuck. I had created grooves, patterns and ways of being that I just didn’t like. I didn’t like who I was and more importantly, I knew that if I didn’t make some drastic decisions, I wasn’t going to end up where I wanted to be in my life. It’s like having a kitchen that’s stuck in the 70’s, no matter what you do, no matter how much you try to pretend like the formica countertops and linoleum floors AREN’T there, they are and only when you GUT the kitchen can you hope to change it.
Years ago, Tony, my husband and I bought our dream home. Over 6500 square feet of living, heated swimming pool, four car garage, on a lake in South Florida. It was a foreclosure property; you could see the sunny Florida sunshine straight up through our roof when you stood in the living room!
“Bad” would be a good way of describing the condition our home was in!
We completely GUTTED and REMODELED that house. Starting with the roof, every wall, all the stairs, every square foot of flooring had to be gutted and completely redone. I OVERSAW the whole project. Day after day I sat in the middle of the madness as our house was brought back to a livable condition. It was a labor of love that taught me SO MUCH about life.
A good majority of the walls in our kitchen had to be replaced because of mold. And one day as I was sitting on a stool, looking at the bare wood beams behind the walls, I couldn’t help but think about the times in my life when I felt like I had been gutted back to the bare infrastructure of my being; when my “beams” were showing. That time of my life was messy, disruptive, just like the renovation we were undertaking with that home.
Designing a home is very, very similar to designing a life.
When I’ve RE-DEIGNED my life, I GUTTED it. I left relationships and places that weren’t compatible with where I was going. I started over again emotionally, re-trained my way of thinking and the attachments that I had grown used to. I REDESIGNED my life in such a way as to bring it UP TO DATE WITH WHERE I WAS HEADED, not where I had been!!
It took months but eventually our dream home truly became our dream and for me personally, it took years, but eventually my life truly became worth living. And for you, if your life is still STUCK —like a 70’s outdated kitchen—it’s TIME to REDESIGN! And that’s what this show’s about today! Let’s use the momentum created by sprucing things up in our physical homes as the catalyst for change and re-design of our INTERNAL LIVES! So here’s some food for thought as you go out to DESIGN YOUR BEST LIFE this week:
FIRST: think about the UNITY in your life. Life is easier when all the pieces fit together in a unified fashion. Eliminate things from your life that don’t fit anymore!
SECOND: look at the BALANCE in your life. In interior design balance creates a feeling of equilibrium, in our lives balance looks like not having habits, or thoughts that destroy our equilibrium. Do you have balanced thinking? Are there patterns or habits that pull you in a direction you don’t want to go? Work on creating a sense of balance in your life.
And THIRD: find your RHYTHM! What pace is your life moving? Procrastination IS KILLING so many people! DO NOT put your life on hold, procrastinating, and waiting!! Pick up the pace, improve the rhythm of your life.
